Clinical Evaluation of Total Abdominal Hysterectomy

Abstract
A clinical evaluation was attempted to analyze 912 women who underwent total abdominal hysterectomy at the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Marynoll Hospital, Pusan, from January, 1990 to December, 1993.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. The most common age distribution was 40 to 49 years and 51.21% of patient(467 cases) belonged to that age range.
2. The most common parity was para 2 which constituted 37.39%(341 cases).
3. The most common symptoms & signs were palpable mass (23.74%) and followed by lower abdominal pain(18.87%) and vaginal bleeding(16.87%).
4. The uterine myoma was most commonly indicated for hysterectomy and constituted 51.54%(470 cases).
5. Anemia(less than 10.0gm%) was found in 204 cases(22.37%).
6. Majority of cases were received abdominal hysterectomy including 21 cases of radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy.
7. Leiomyoma was the most common postoperative pathologic findings(49.67%) and follow by adenomyosis(30.04%).
8. Overall complication rate of total abdominal hysterectomy was 22.95% and most common complication was febrile morbidity in 7.12% of all cases.
9. Mean admission days were 8.57days and 57.57% of patients(525 cases) discharged on the 8th postop day.
10. Overall 77.75% of the patients underwent hysterectomy for appropriate and uncertain reasons(i. e risks and benefits are about equal), and 22.25% for inappropriate reasons(i. e. the risks outweigh the benefits).
